The School Based Training (Salaried) training programme offers you a way of qualifying as a teacher whilst working in one of our Partner Schools. This is a one-year individualised training programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). With QTS you can work as a qualified teacher in any Maintained School, Sixth Form, Tertiary or Further Education College in England or Wales.
School Based Training (Salaried) is for an ideal route into teaching for graduates with some work experience. Career changers can bring valuable skills and experience to the profession which they have developed since leaving university.
Competition to enter teaching via the School Based Training (Salaried) route is strong and candidates are expected to be of a high calibre and show a strong commitment to teaching, for example, by having worked as a Teaching Assistant or Cover Supervisor.
Following successful application, interview and appointment, School Based Training (Salaried) trainees complete a Skills Audit and an individualised Training Plan is developed to guide their studies and teaching development for the training period. Trainees will be required to train within two consecutive age ranges, which typically covers Key Stages 3 and 4, and across all ability levels. Thomas Telford School acts as the Lead School and is the base for the Education and Professional Issues component of the programme.
Trainees will spend a minimum of 20 days in a contrasting second school to help gain a wider knowledge and understanding of learning and teaching. Trainees also spend time in a Primary school to develop their knowledge of both Key Stage 2 and transition into Key Stage 3. School Based Training (Salaried) trainees are required to complete a series of short academic assignments as part of their studies, including a Comparative Study between their Training School and School 2 placements
The School Based Training (Salaried) training programme is one of the Training Agency's Employment Based Initial Teacher Training programmes.
The training salary for a School Based Training (Salaried) trainee is at Point 1 of the Unqualified Teacher Salary Scale and is paid by the training school.
