School Based Training Routes

The School Based Training routes, both of which lead to the award of Qualified Teacher Status, allow schools to be at the heart of the teacher training process. There are two versions of the programme, School Based Training (Bursary Led) and School Based Training (Salaried). In both cases, schools request training places, recruit trainees and form a partnership with a training provider such as the West Midlands Consortium. The school and training provider determine the pattern of training, agree responsibilities and ensure a personalised approach to the course for each trainee.

Background

In recent years, Initial Teacher Training (ITT) in England has undergone a shift towards school-led provision such as that proven highly successful by the West Midlands Consortium (WMC). The widespread partnership of schools led by Thomas Telford School (TTS) has been recognised as an outstanding model of delivery and one that provides an excellent and well-supported route into the teaching profession.

Bursary Led

Similar to the standard WMC School Based Training (Salaried) route. The trainee, or training school, pays a course fee and is eligible for a tax free bursary. This route will lead to QTS.

In this route route trainees are employed as an unqualified teacher by their training school and receive a salary from them. This route will lead to QTS  and is not eligible for a bursary.
