PGCE in Physical Education
The PGCE Physical Education course aims to prepare graduates with some basic knowledge but a keen interest in teaching/instructing/coaching, for a full time teaching position in a Local Authority School in England or Wales. Whilst some of our Associate Teachers do work in the independent sector the training at the Consortium is based upon the current National Curriculum requirements.
Work across all six Activity Areas is covered both at the Lead and Partner Schools and also in a residential setting for certain appropriate aspects of the course. The facilities used are very good and allow us to also run a number of popular National Governing Body award courses to help Associate Teachers gain subject knowledge and accreditation through nationally recognised routes.
All Associate Teachers experience two different school placements but are well supported in both by well trained and experienced Subject Mentors many of whom have worked with the scheme for a number of years. The Course Tutor has an overview of this and the group work closely to monitor and record progress. This information is always shared with the individual trainees. The training element will not only provide for a range of practical work and public examination based courses, both academic and vocational, but also for the growing number of leadership awards that have grown in popularity under a range of national initiatives.
The course is assessed by the Q standards that are used by all teacher training institutions. These will be met during your teaching placements mostly in the classroom setting. In addition there are a number of written assignments reflecting different but important aspects of your knowledge of teaching and the three common on line skills tests in numeracy, literacy and ICT.
Over the past six years all trainees have secured teaching positions on leaving the course, many working locally have enjoyed early promotions and now find themselves playing some role in the training of the most recent group members.
